Media literacy through collaborative production

Video Exhibition at PS 32

Video still from REAL HEROES Video still from REAL HEROES We've been making progress with our video production work at PS 32 in Brooklyn. We worked with the boys for 10 sessions to produce a 5 minute video, and showed the video as part of GSS's "Hero Project". "REAL HEROES" was the title, and it got a great response at the show.

The boys learned the process of production by collaborating with me on a "Video News Release" exploring the question "do the media we consume affect our behavior?" They took turns filming interviews, then we made editing decisions together using a projector, stills from the Internet, and a laptop with iMovie.

They learned how multiple film shots come together in sequences to make movie scenes by deconstructing an action sequence, and a conversation from Spiderman 2 into storyboards.

For their final production they re-made the conversation scene from Spidey 2 shot-for-shot, scripted and shot an introduction to sketches on "real-life heroes", then scripted, storyboarded, shot and edited 3 skits on their theme.

Stay tuned for a link to the "Real Heroes" and their Video News Release, as well as more collaborative work between GSS students and TMS in August.
