Media literacy through collaborative production

Heritage High's TV Turnoff Blog

April 23, 2007 by Andy

A high school English teacher at Heritage High in Colorado ran his annual TV Turnoff on a Wordpress-powered blog through consulting with TMS. The TV Turnoff is part of a media studies unit that their teacher, Joey Destefano, has incorporated into his high school English class for a few years now, but this was the first time that the students' experiences were documented online. Mr. D. is quick to note the irony of using the Internet to facilitate a "screen-dissuasion" program, but the new medium seemed to add to the kids' heightened awareness of technology-dependence, as well as increase their excitement and participation.

Both the TV Turnoff and the blog discussion are great examples of simple media education projects that can be integrated easily into existing curricula, engage students, and promote basic media literacy concepts. Check out Mr. D's 2007 TV Turnoff at heritage47.wordpress.com.
