This is a "video illustration" produced by the students of class 3-307 at PS 124 in Brooklyn, NY.
This project was completed through a combination of free writing, guided practice, group writing, and hands-on technology practice.
The students worked with the teacher and TMS with a video camera, laptop, projector, and an old-fashioned overhead to adapt a piece of their persuasive writing for video. We came up with a 3 sentence concept as a class, and talked about how the camera can help communicate certain things through close ups, mid-shots and wide shots. Then small groups planned what types of shots should be used to convey the information in the sentences they were adapting, and typed them onto our blog.
Together as a class, we narrowed down our ideas to a 3-shot plan, and sketched storyboards on an overhead projector.
During the shoot, students operated the camera on a tripod to frame the shots based on their storyboards.
They captured the video and edited in iMovie as a class, making decisions as a group, and taking turns performing operations on a laptop connected to an LCD projector.
The results have been posted to YouTube, and embedded in their persuasive essay blog post.
